Sunday - May 7
The Moffatts'
first Hawaiian home |
We left our vacation home in Calgary, Alberta around 6:00 am and arrived in Hawaii at 2:40
pm local time. We we're met by Frazier, Bob Rock's assistant.
Frazier took us to the first home that we would be renting for a week.
Once we we're settled in we decided, "what the heck, we've got a couple of
hours, let's write a new song." In this business you can never have enough good songs.
The song we wrote is titled "Call a Doctor, She's in My Head," it's an uptempo
rocker!!
Around 6:30 pm we drove down to Haiku and ate dinner at a local Italian Restaurant called
"Trattoria." By 9:00 pm we were all bagged and crashed. Ten hours of travel time
plus a 4 hr time change made for a real long day.
Monday - May 8
Bob on drums |
We were all up by 6:00 am (time change) ate breakfast and put in a couple of hours on
math. At 1:00 pm we met with Bob Rock, our producer who has produced acts like; Metallica,
Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Areosmith, Tal Bachman and the list goes on and on!!! He was really
nice and very laid back.
We all listened to a CD with a number of songs we had demo'd and then played 6 new ones
acoustically, so that he could get a feel of what we were all about and where we were
headed musically. He liked our stuff, and felt we had quite a few contenders for singles
so we decided to get started.
The plan was to lay down the drum tracks for the first five songs. We worked until about
6:30 pm and then took an hour and a half for dinner (we ate at a little southwest cuisine
restaurant called "Milagros.") After dinner it was back to the studio where we
worked until about 10:00 pm.
Tuesday - May 9
Clint on Bass |
We slept much better last night and woke up this morning at about 10:00 am. We showered,
ate breakfast and put in an hour on math before heading over to the studio at noon.
To us drum tracks are like live jam sessions and we're lucky to have a drummer like Bob
(Glenn Ballard, Paul Fox and Bob Rock all world class producers have said he's one of the
best studio drummers they've ever worked with), because he's so solid and quick. Later
this week we'll each replay or overdub (which means we play and record our parts one at a
time) our parts on the bass, guitar, keyboards and then vocals after the drum tracks are
complete.
We finished the drums at about 5:00 pm and took a couple of hours off for dinner, which
Sheila made at the house (Steak and potatoes.)
At 7:00 pm Clint went in to begin laying down his bass parts and finished up for the day
at about 10:00 pm. The rest of us worked on our computer course, no rest for the wicked!!
Wednesday - May 10
We woke up today at about 9:30 am, showered, ate breakfast and put in a couple of hours on
math before Clint went back into the studio. The rest of us worked on our computer course
for the rest afternoon. Clint finished up his parts around 6:30 pm. We ate dinner
(Sheila's Mexican fiesta)!!! and at 8:00 pm it was Dave's turn to start in the studio.
He worked until about 10:00 pm while the rest of us watched TV. It's tough on us Canadians
over here "NO HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA"!!!! Thank God for ESPN!!!
Thursday - May 11
Dave on the keyboard |
Same ole same old in the morning, showers, breakfast, math until noon.
Once again it was Dave's turn to work on more keyboard parts, while the rest of us went
shopping in Kahuhui with Sheila. Dave finished at about 6:00 pm and we went to
"Milagros" again for dinner (great food and great service).
At 7:30 pm Scott began his guitar parts. He worked until about 9:30 pm, while the rest of
us watched the tube.
Friday - May 12
Scott on the
guitar with Bob Rock |
Ditto for the morning. At noon Scott went in to lay down more guitar tracks and we did
school.
Scott say's that Bob Rock is truly a genius when it comes to guitar sounds and that it's
totally amazing how fast he can dial in the effects pedals.
We think it's amazing that Scott can play the Sitar Guitar and Lap Steel. We ate dinner at
the house around 6:00 pm (pasta). Scott went back into the studio at 7:30 pm. He worked
until 10:00 pm while we watched a movie.
Saturday - May 13
Dave
with Bob Rock's daughters |
Nothing seems to be changing during our mornings, or at least up to this point (we hope
things are about to change soon).
Today Scott only worked until 4:30 pm as two of Bob Rocks daughters had a dance recital.
We all went and it was hilarious (well at least the little girls were) the older students
we're actually quite impressive.
The recital ended around nine so it seemed like a good time to catch a nice cool desert at
one on the local establishments (ice-cream in Hawaii, gotta love it). We got home just in
time to catch "Saturday Night Live." That show's way too funny.
Sunday - May 14th
Mother's day! Yahoo a day off!! And what does every good Hawaiian do on mothers day?
SURF!! And we had a blast!
It was amazing, we all got up, Surfing Dudes, that's us! (we have to admit we had a couple
of Bob Rock's surfing buddies there to show us the ropes, which of course made a huge
difference).
Tired, worn out and a little sun burnt we packed her in at about 7:00 pm. On the way home
we stopped at Charleys (Willie Nelson and Steven Tyler sang at this place a couple of
months back.) The food was good and hit the spot.
Monday - May 15th
The new house |
We had to get up a little earlier today as we had to change houses. At noon Scott went
back into the studio to finish guitar parts and worked until about 5:30 pm. The three of
us worked on our computer course and watched a little hockey on ESPN.
Not only does this new house have a great view but better cable!!!! We ate dinner at
around 5:30 pm (Sheila's, Cajun Chicken Caesar Salad).
At 7:00 pm Scott went back into the studio to sing lead vocals on "Just Another
Phase." He finished up at 9:30. The rest of us wrote a new Song called "Walking
Behind." When Scott got home we wrote another called "California."
After all the brain drain we were more than happy to hit the sack.
Tuesday - May 16
This morning Clint and I sat around and checked out our new tunes. There's always room for
improvement. Scott and Dave did an interview for LIKE.COM.
At noon Scott went back to the studio to finish his vocals and a few guitar lick's on
"Just Another Phase." He finished up at 4:00 pm and Dave took over singing the
lead on "Boom, Boom, Bang."
Clint and I worked on our math and computer courses. At 6:00 pm we ate dinner (Shish
Kabobs.) At 7:30 Dave went back to finish of his vocals while the rest of worked on math.
Wednesday - May 17
This morning after our showers and breakfast we worked on our typing skills.
We all seem to be averaging around 20 words a minute. To pass our computer course we need
to be able to type 30 words a minute without mistakes.
Dave went into the studio around 2:00 pm and sang lead on a new song that we just added
into the mix. It's a ballad and from all early indications looks like a good one. Dave
sang until 7:00 pm. We ate dinner and then Scott went over to lay down his vocals. The
rest of us watched the tube until he got home around 11:00 pm.
Thursday - May 18
This morning we got up around 8:00 am showered and went into KAHULUI. Bob and I got hair
cuts while Dave got his colored.
Scott didn't need to go as he's been chopping the _ _ _ _ out of his for the last couple
weeks him self. He better hope our music career works out because he hasn't got a prayer
as a hair stylist.
We ate lunch in town while Scott and Dad ate at the house. At 2:00 pm Dave went back in to
do a few touch ups on the ballad and then Scott went in after dinner to put down his
backgrounds on one of the possible singles.
Clint and Bob went back into KAHULUI to watch the movie Gadiator and then came back out to
put down a few background parts of their own. Friday, May 19 (Dave's point of view)
Not much happening today as it is a travel day for us. We are on our way to San Francisco
to attend a prom on Saturday night.
Twist magazine along with Rocketcash ran an essay contest, the winner and three of her
friends get to take us, the Moffatts, to prom as their dates!
We got up at 9:30, showered, ate breakfast and headed for the airport by 11:00 AM. Our
flight to Oakland was at 12:30 and arrived in Oakland at 9:00 PM. There was a car waiting
to take us to the hotel.
Upon arrival and check in we decided we were too tired to eat so we crashed for the
evening, knowing that Saturday is going to be a very busy day.
Saturday May 20th (Dave)
The Moffatts' in
their tuxes |
Sheila woke us all up at 9:00 AM, except for Scott who was already awake!
We showered up then had to go get fitted for our tuxes. The tux shop was literary directly
across the street from the hotel so we just walked over.
We tried on the tuxes and they were a perfect fit. Scott was hoping we would get to keep
the tuxes, he has always wanted one (I think it comes from the James Bond thing!!!).
From there we returned to the Hotel for some breakfast. Following breakfast Sheila and Bob
went to the florist to pick up the wrist corsages for the girls while Clint, Scott and I
went up to our rooms to start on our homework ... typing.
The car was scheduled to pick us up at 4:45 then continue on to the girls house but it got
stuck in traffic on the Bay Bridge so it was an hour late.
We went to Laura's, the contest winner, friend's house first. There we took tons of
photo's with three different media photographers and of course the parents and friends of
our prom dates.
The Moffatts' and their prom dates |
We were an hour away from the event so along with two other couples we jumped in the limo
and headed off. We arrived just in time for the dinner, during which a DJ played. After
dinner the actual dance began and again a DJ did the entertaining.
At about 10:30 all of us went upstairs to take some formal pictures with the official prom
photographer. Then we got right back to dancing the night away. The dance ended at
midnight, so with the limo waiting outside for us we loaded up.
We dropped off the girls first then went back to the hotel where Sheila was up and waiting
to hear all about our evening.
The entire evening was a huge success, with fun had by all. I even came out of it with a
new nickname, compliments of our dates... DUCKY!!!(do you remember the movie Pretty in
Pink???)
We finally hit the hay at about 2:00 AM totally exhausted. Our wake up call is at 6:30 AM
and our flight back to Maui at 9:00.
Sunday, May 22nd(Bob)
We are now in a daily routine, wake up at 9:30... my Dad and I have started working out at
the local gym so while were are the gym my brothers shower, eat breakfast, and begin
school work.
Homework!! |
We worked out for about an hour then I joined my brothers. We are focusing on math and a
computer course which consists of typing.
Following lunch Scott and Dave went to the studio to work on lead vocals.
Clint challenged me to a tennis match, he may be a better tennis player but I look better
on the court then he does!!!!
Scott finished his parts first in the studio then Dave finished up his at about 6:30.
We ate dinner, BBQ chicken and pasta, then had some friends over for popcorn and a movie.
Goodnight!!!
Tuesday, May 22nd (Bob)
Today everyone but ME was needed in the studio, maybe they save the best for last???
Clint was the first to go in to the studio and lay down some bass parts.
Later in the afternoon Scott and Dave went up to put their parts down. After finishing my
schoolwork, I played tennis with our producer's kids. Got a little sunburn going but it
really wasn't too hot out.
Everyone returned to the house for dinner where Sheila and I were preparing twice baked
potatoes and marinated chicken on the grill. Maybe I'm destined to be a drummer/chef ????
Then it was back to the studio for all of us to work on various vocals.
We worked until about 10:00 PM then went back to our house, caught up on some sports
updates and retired for the evening.
Wednesday, May 23rd (Bob)
Same routine today, up at 9:30, work out, shower, breakfast and school work.
Dave went to the studio at noon where he worked with several different types of keyboards,
synth's and racks searching for the ideal sounds for the album.
He worked until 5:30 then I went up to do a "one take" drum part!
During the day Clint, Scott and I worked on homework taking an hour break to get in a
tennis match. After dinner Scott went back to work at the studio while my brothers, Sheila
and I watched the final episode of Spin City and the last half of the movie "Happy
Gilmore".
Being avid golfers and huge Adam Sandler fans we loved this movie!
Scott finished up at 10:30, we are getting really close to having an entire song completed
which is a good thing because everyone in the record company is so excited to get this
delivered to radio.
Of course we still don't know which song will be our first single but we all have our
favorites!!
Thursday, May 26 (scott)
Today's morning was pretty much the normal routine. After lunch Dave went to the studio to
work his magic on the current song we are working on.
At 1:00 Clint did a phone interview with Power 107 radio station in Calgary for their
drive time. He and Maz McFly talked about the future of the Calgary Flames and the
progress of their season ticket sales. Maz also mentioned that Power was #1 in the ratings
but like Clint said "we never had a doubt that you weren't #1!!!"
Clint filled him in on what we were doing in Maui, working not playing, and signed off
with plans to call again next Thursday during drive time for another update.
During the rest of the day Bob, Clint and I did school work while listening to some music,
today's selection was Pink Floyd (my choice) and Bryan Adams (Clint's choice).
Dave returned from the studio at about 5:00, he was sooooo pumped with what they had done
today. He played on about 10 different keyboards, racks and synth's, coming up with some
really funky sounds. Bob Rock's studio is like a candy store for musician's!!! Often, this
doesn't even feel like work because we are having so much fun while learning from the
"Master" as we go.
After dinner I went up to lay down some guitar fills. Then Bob was able to give us a
"rough" mix of the song we had been working on.
It's just the ultimate to finally hear the outcome of what you have been working so hard
on. It's like the artist that finally finishes his mastepiece! Although this isn't our
finished product it's getting really close and we have a pretty good idea of the outcome.
Friday, June 27 (Scott)
My morning started out doing a phone interview with a radio station from New Brunswick
talking about the concerts we are doing on July 4 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and July 5 in
Harbor Station, Saint John, NB. Then I practised typing and math all morning! Still trying
to reach my goal of 30 WPM, you would think a guitar player would make an awesome typer?
but I'm finding out otherwise.
Dave was in the studio today for most of the day then I went up to do some guitar tracks.
Dave not only worked on keys but did some vocals as well.
We finished up early as there was some work to be done by the engineers, so we got the
evening off, well not really there is always school work to do!
Saturday, May 27th (Bob)
Well, it's been awhile since we last talked. Sorry for the delay but we have been sorta
busy! So let's get back on track.
Today Dave and Scott finished the keyboard and guitar tracks on one of the songs we think
may have a chance a becoming a single. Clint and myself got in a couple of hours of
tennis, (the good guys didn't win)! and took a break in the action to chill!
It's great staying at this house because what others take for granted we really appreciate
HOME COOKED MEALS!!
Sunday, May 28th (Dave)
Today Bob Rock and Randy Staub began the final mix on a song, so we took the opportunity
to catch up on our math, however we popped into the studio every so often to give our
opinions on how we felt things were going.
About 6:30 pm we all (Bob Rock and his family also) went to the theaters and caught MI2,
while Randy pushed on with the mix.
We give it a B+ rating, lots of action and great stunts, just a little predictable at
times.
Oh Ya! Did you know that Bob Rock produced the Metallica song on the soundtrack, "I
Disappear?"
Monday, May 29th (Clint)
Bob and Randy continued on with the mix all day so we split our time between tennis and
school work and later prepared for the BBQ we were having that evening.
We invited everyone from the studio and their families and chow'd down on shrimp, lobster,
chicken kabobs, steak, corn on the cob and all the fixings.
Bob Rock supervised our dad on the BBQ.
Tuesday, May 30th (Scott)
Randy, Mike and Eric had to get the studio back into recording mode during the day. As for
us we worked on math and our computers.
After dinner we went up to the studio and began laying down the drum tracks on the
remaining songs.
It's been a super tough decision, cutting down and eliminating songs (we started with just
over 30 songs) and we needed to cut down to 12.
What people don't know is that the four of us have massively different tastes and opinions
when it comes to music, so it was murder closing out the final 4 songs to complete the
album.
We finally cast our votes and are totally happy with the final outcome, which you will
hear when you buy the album (right? You will buy our album?).
Wednesday, May 31st (Scott)
This morning we woke up around 10:00 am and put a couple of hours in on math and typing.
Today we started around noon and finished just after 10:00 pm, we did however take an hour
and a half for dinner.
In order to lay down the drum tracks we all need to play together, which of course is the
best part of it for us. By days end we had two more drum tracks complete, giving us a
total of seven.
Thursday, June 1st (Clint ) School again until noon then back up to the studio for
more tracking. Today we put down 3 drum tracks or should I say Bob did!!!
It's amazing over here in Maui, sun, sun, sun. The only negative is that it's always
breezy, but they say it's only at this time of the year, because of the trade winds and
because we are on this side of the island.
I guess if I was a windsurfer it would be paradise.
Friday, June 2nd (Bob)
This morning we slept until 11:30 am ate lunch and went back up to the studio to lay down
track # 12.
Yahoo I'm finished, well not really, I still have a few percussion things to do, but when
they're done and math is finished "IT'S SURF CITY" for Bob.
We went out for dinner today at "Charlies". Great Wings!!!
Saturday, June 3th (Dave)
This morning we just lounged around until Clint had to go up and begin the bass parts.
He finished off two tracks and then Scott went up to begin putting the basic guitar tracks
down.
Bob and I played a bit of tennis and watched a little hockey.
When Clint came down we played a little more tennis.
In the evening Scott went back up. As for the three of us, we watched TV and vegged!
Sunday, June 4th (Clint)
We were invited to sing at the local church, so we accepted their invitation and sang
"When God Made You" a track from our second album. (You did know we are working
on our fifth album didn't you!)
The service was very interactive and everyone was truly grateful for the added
entertainment to their service.
We in turn want to thank the congregation for inviting us. Following church it was off to
the beach for a day of surfing!
We went to the other side of the island, near the town of Lahaina. Surfing was the
ultimate until Dave stepped down on a sea urchin which in turn shot black needle like
things into his big toe.
He came out of the water like a shark had just munched on his leg!!!
But you know Dave, this immediately got the attention of all the girls on the beach...what
a clever guy!!!
We ate dinner at the Hard Rock in Lahaina then did a little shopping at the Banana
Republic next door.
By the end of the evening Dave had completely forgotten about his mishap!!!
Monday, June 5th (Dave)
This morning we all slept in again. Clint had to put down a few bass parts on another song
and then Scott went up to lay down more guitar.
Bob and I played a little tennis and then worked on Math.
After dinner we rented "Man on the moon." We thought it was a great movie and
Jim Carry was amazing, but it's sure hard to watch someone ruin their life like that.
Tuesday, June 6th (Bob)
This morning we woke up around 9:00 and put in a good three hours on school before Scott
went up to put down some more guitar.
On this record we will all be singing lead vocals on different songs (another reason to
buy the album).
We all discussed it and felt that it worked really well for the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and
the Eagles and considering they are three of the biggest selling bands of all time we may
as well go to school off of the best.
Wednesday, June 7th (Scott)
Again a morning of school.
At noon I went up and put down the lead vocal on one of my songs. I finished around 6:00
pm.
In the evening Bob, Mike and Eric comp'd the vocal. With Bob we sing the song 8 times and
then he then puts together the best performance.
Some other bands and artists may sing the song as many as thirty times. While others go
through it line by line over and over until they get it right.
For us the most important thing is to deliver the song with the proper emotions, not
"was our pitch perfect."
While they worked we rented another movie "Meet Joe Black."
Thursday, June 8th (Clint)
This morning we looked at the plans for our extension at our vacation home near Calgary.
Man everytime we get them revised it seems like the place is getting bigger.
This afternoon it was Dave's turn to sing lead, so the rest of us played tennis, worked on
our computers, did math and caught a few rays. Dave only sang until 5:30.
It was Mike's anniversary so we watched his three little girls, had a BBQ and watched the
MTV Movie awards. Mostly to see Metallica.
Friday, June 9th (Bob)
Today started of great! We didn't have to wake up until noon.
We ate lunch and met with a photographer.
Around 1:30 pm Scott went up to put down some guitar tracks, while the rest of us did a
bit of school and played tennis.
After dinner Scott had to go back up and put down more guitar tracks. you know, working
with Bob Rock is proving to be more than an incredible experience, the guy is down right
amazing, he has every instrument ever made (or at least it appears that way) plus he more
musical idea's than Minnesota's got lakes!
Between the four of us we have played or sang every note on this album so far and in
today's musical world we're more than lucky to have a producer who affords us this
opportunity.
Even Clint who normally plays bass has played acoustic guitar on one track!
Thank God we're finished the drums, right Scott!
Saturday, June 10th
Today we slept until 11:30 AM as tomorrow we have to get up with the birds at 5:30 to play
tourists.
After lunch Scott went up to lay down more guitar tracks. I don't think people will be
able to compare us with vocal groups after this record. Clint and I played a bit of Tennis
while Dave baked in the sun.
Since he's singing lead on the first single he wants to have that summertime look. After
dinner we just hung out watching TV as Bob Rock had to comp a lead vocal.
Bob
Sunday, June 11th
This morning we got up at 5:30 AM, to go snorkeling at Molakini. It's a volcano crater
that has been turned into a marine park.
The Moffatts
snorkelling |
Clint and Bob went scuba diving while Scott and I snorkeled around on the surface.
We saw a huge turtle feeding on the bottom and thousands of tropical fish including the
dreaded Sea Urchin!! We got back around 1:00 PM drove over to Ho'okipa beach to catch a
few waves.
The Moffatts
ready to catch some waves |
I have to admit, surfing is a blast! We at dinner at Jacque's with everybody from the
studio and got home around 9:00 PM. Within 10 minutes I'll bet everyone had crashed.
Dave
Monday, June 12th
This morning we had to get up at 8:30 because we had a tutor coming in to prep us for our
math test.
We worked on math until 11:00 ate lunch and then Clint went up to the studio to sing his
lead vocal. The rest of us set up band gear at the house that Bob Rock was kind enough to
loan us so that we could get in a little rehearsal before the tour.
After dinner Scott went back up to lay down more guitar tracks, while the rest of us
reviewed math.
Bob
Tuesday, June 13th
Our tutor arrived again at 9:00 AM today, but today we worked on math until noon as
tomorrow we have other things planned. After lunch we jammed a bit in the living room and
then Bob went up at 1:00 PM to lay down his lead vocal.
I don't think people realize what a good vocalist Bob is, but after this record I'm sure
people will look at him musically as more than just a good drummer.
After dinner Bob Rock had to comp the vocal so for us it meant an opportunity to go out
for dinner and relax.
Scott
Wednesday, June 14th
This morning we woke up at 9:00 AM and got ready for a small photo shoot as EMI Canada
needed an up to date photo to send out across Canada to promote our new single. It's
totally amazing over here.
The vegetation grows so fast that at one location a tractor had a huge tree growing out of
it. Up and around the seat, around the motor, over the tracks, it was really weird! Then
we went to this old school house and the trees were growing in and out of the walls, right
out of Stephen King.
The Moffatts
enjoying Hawaii. |
At 1:00 PM Scott had to be back at the studio to lay down more guitar. I think that on
this record you will need to listen a hundred times before you will be able to hear all
the cool little parts that create the atmosphere for each song.
After dinner we jammed a while and then Scott went up to sing a lead vocal, while the rest
of practiced our parts and just chilled at the house.
Dave
Thursday, June 15th
Another morning of Math (Yahoo!) After lunch we all went up to lay down a few harmonies of
Bob's song. It's a killer, a real sleeper.
We worked until 6:00 PM ate dinner and went back up at 7:30 and worked until 10:00.
We've worked hard to put some interesting harmonies on this record that will give our fans
that little something special, that possibly they hadn't expected.
Clint
Friday, June 16th
So this morning we worked on Math, we are almost ready to write the test and ACE IT TOO!!!
Directly after that Xan and Leslie from YTV were ready and waiting for us.
YTV interview |
They came over to Maui from Toronto to shoot their season finale and 10th Birthday of the
Hit List! We went down to the ocean front and did about an hour interview with them. They
also came up to the studio to check things out!
That afternoon Scott sang a lead vocal, while the rest of us talked with the EPK
(Electronic Press Kit) director. Later we went to dinner in Paia as Bob Rock was comping
the Scott's vocal. This was really a business meeting with some of our record label rep's,
a photographer and stylist making the game plan for the photo shoot scheduled for Saturday
and Sunday.
We have worked with the stylist before, David Kane, on several other projects. We tell
David what direction we are going and he does the shopping! He finds some of the coolest
stuff. We then pick out what we are comfortable wearing and hope it looks good on camera.
After dinner we rehearsed at the house.
Bob
Saturday, June 17th
The photo shoot crew arrived at our house around 10:30. The plan was to decide what would
look best in the studio as far as clothing went, because that would be our only location
for the day.
We picked out some basic jeans and tee shirts, stuff we normally wear in the studio. We
shot individual's with the various instruments that we play in the studio. Dave had to
work at 1:00 PM on his keyboard parts so he was the first to do his photo's. Then it was
Bob, Clint and my turn.
We finished up the shoot at around 7:00 PM. Dave worked in the studio all day and into the
night with Bob Rock and John Webster on keyboard parts (John is great with sounds and a
great coach if fact he's worked with Areosmith, Tom Cochran et cetera). They finished up
around 1:00 in the morning!!! Dave was completely fried when they finally finished!!!
Scott
Sunday, June 18th
Today was the album photo shoot and call time was 7:00 AM at the location (you got it 5:00
AM for us).
Not much sleep for Dave but that's show biz!!! Our first location was in the crater of a
volcano. We drove about an hour to get there then had to walk a mile and a half to get to
the final location! It was soooooo cold and windy down there that when we came out our
faces and the clothes were covered with dirt! That should make for some good pictures huh?
The second location was just down the road from the crater around some totally awesome
military buildings.
The Moffatts
pose for photos |
They had to close these down to the public because people were breaking into them thinking
that the military was holding aliens there!!!! Too weird! We carried on from there to our
third location which was an old high school. It was a super cool place to shoot. Part of
the building had burned down, some trees had grown into the building around pillars and
thru window frames.
From there we moved on to the very coolest place on the island as far as strange things to
see. There is an old Banyan tree that has completely taken over a historic plantation
mill. The tree has grown up, down and around every inch of this vacant mill. It's like
something out of a ghost story! We could have shot here all day. There was so many
different settings including the surrounding sugar cane field. After dinner we were all
bagged and crashed!
Clint
Monday, June 19th
First thing this morning we went with the EPK crew to the beach to get in a bit of
surfing. It doesn't take to long to wear yourself out when there's a strong current, so we
packed it in around 11:30 AM and went back to the house for lunch.
After lunch we all went up to the studio as we were now focusing on harmonies, guitar
overdubs, keyboard overdubs and the percussion to complete each track. We all need to be
in the room, because we need lots of different ideas.
Sheila put on a Mexican spread fit for a king as we had management and the record label
people over for dinner. At 7:30 however it was time to head back up and lay down more
parts.

This morning the EPK crew wanted to do the interview at the old Sugar Mill so we went over
at about 9:00 AM. The interview lasted about an hour and a half which gave us a bit of
time to rehearse before lunch.
After lunch it was back to the studio to complete another track. Around 6:00 we broke for
dinner. After we ate we rehearsed for about an hour and went back up to keep adding parts.
In case your wondering why we agreed to do the Christina tour, it's because we thought we
should debut our new music in our home country first. So we hope you've bought your
tickets to the concert and are prepared to ROCK!!!

This morning our tutor was back and I have to admit for the last two months it seems like
our life is either music or math and to be honest I'll be thrilled when we're finished the
later.
We worked until 11:00 AM on math, rehearsed for an hour, ate lunch and went up to the
studio. Dave sang a lead vocal while Clint, Bob and I ran over the new songs.
We ate dinner in town at Charlie's and that evening rehearsed again as Bob Rock comped the
vocal. We crashed pretty early as we've been going pretty hard lately.

Math tutor in the morning, ate lunch, rehearsed for a couple of hours. Around 3:00 PM we
broke down all the gear and took it up to Bob's pool to do a little show for his son's
birthday (5 or 6 songs).
Relaxing...and
having fun. |
It was nice to have a day off or at least a day of no pressure, because for us jamming is
always fun! We got home rather late but it was a great party (Bob Rock even joined us on
guitar for one song).
One strange thing did happen, however! We had just finished setting up the gear and Bob's
mother-in-law came down and said there was a fan at the gate. First off we'd like to say
we know we have the most clever and ingenious fans alive.
However in this type of situation fans need to remember that while we may be fair game
outside of our home and hotels (of which we consider our private time), the people we work
with are not a part of our public life and their privacy must always be respected.

We slept until 11:30 today as the party effects lingered into the morning. However at noon
it was time to sing more harmonies.
Each time one of us had a break we had to pack gear back down to the house for more
rehearsals. We worked until 6:00 broke for dinner and went back up from 7:30 to 10:00.
On the last day of this journal we'll compile all the instruments we've used on this
project into one list that if you're musically inclined may blow your mind.

Sheila was heading back to Calgary tonight to pick up Moffie for the tour, Jude is holding
the fort with Nana and Papa as she needs an operation on one of her tear ducts. So that
meant a major cleanup of this house.
We finished around 11:00 so we put in a couple of hours on the instruments, grabbed a bite
to eat and went up to the studio around 1:00.
We made our own dinner that night as Dad and Sheila went over to Lahaina to pick us up
some new clothes. After dinner we went back up to the studio to lay down more parts. If
you're wondering why we never say the names of the songs, well it's obvious we want the
tour and album to be a surprise.

Today we woke up at 9:00 AM to write our Math test. Yes!!! It's over!!! Only one computer
course left and we're done for the year. After lunch it was back up to the studio and more
parts.
Most people would never realize how many parts go on to a record. The trick them is being
able to play it live and make it sound good with just four instruments, or at least that's
the way we do it.
After dinner we went back up to the studio and worked until 10:00.

Today we woke up around 11:00 jammed a bit and then went back up to the studio.
When we discussed our harmonies for this record we thought it would be best to make them
very challenging but also lots of fun, but like our instruments we have to take care that
we could sing our parts live.
Which meant we couldn't add more than four dominant parts per song! We took our dinner
break around 6:00 and went up to finish the song. With our video being pushed back it's
been great because we now have the time to add the additional bells and whistles.
